Weekend preview: Last hurrah of Colchester’s season of success

Colchester Rugby brings down the curtain on an unprecedently successful season this weekend with final matches for the men’s 2s, 3s and 4s as well as the Iceni.

The first XV campaign may be done and dusted, but there is still plenty for our supporters to shout about, both at home and on the road.

The action starts at Raven Park on Friday night with yet another cup final appearance for the As, who play Ipswich 2s with the Suffolk Silver Cup on the line.

The 3s qualified for the final with a thriller of a semi-final last weekend in which they beat Stowmarket 2s 31-29 to set up Friday night’s blockbuster at Raven Park (kick-off 7.45).

Victory will be a fitting climax for the As, who finished their league season with a highly creditable third placed finish, one slot above this weekend’s opponents from Suffolk.

On Saturday, the Ravens wrap-up their season with a match away to Shelford 2s (kick-off 2pm).

It’s been a mixed season for the 2s, but they have consolidated their position in Counties 1 Eastern Counties in only their second season at this level, and no-one can question their entertainment value, having been involved in a remarkable number of high scoring matches this campaign.

The Ravens go into this final match in ninth place, two places and nine points behind Saturday’s opponents.

It is also the final league outing of the season for the Cavaliers, with Colchester’s 4th team heading to Suffolk to play Ipswich 3s (kick-off TBC – please check club social media channels).

Depending on results elsewhere, a win could mean the Cavs finish in third place in their league, which would be some achievement.

Finally on Sunday, the Iceni bring down the curtain on their campaign as they travel to West Norfolk Warriors Ladies (kick-off 3pm TBC).

By any standard, this has been a remarkable first season in National Challenge League East 1 for the Colchester women, and whatever happens this weekend against the league’s bottom club the Iceni will finish third in the table.

On Sunday, the Colts – fresh from their cup win last weekend – take part in a 7s tournament at Raven Park, getting under way at 12.30.
