Weekend preview: First team return to action at Raven Park!

Colchester rugby supporters will have a first opportunity to cast their eyes over the new-look squad this weekend as the first team return to action at Raven Park after the summer break.

Saturday’s match against Westcombe Park is one of three pre-season warm-up games being played at the Sports Park this weekend with both the 2s and 4s also in action.

With the opening Regional 1 South East league fixture, away to Shelford, on September 6th, Saturday’s match (kick-off 3pm) will be a last hit-out for the squad and a chance for supporters to get a first look at some of the club’s new recruits.

Head coach Mike Haywood will be hoping to build on the hugely encouraging 54-10 win in their first pre-season match away to Camberley a couple of weeks ago.

With respect to their opponents from Surrey that day, Colchester can expect a stiffer challenge against Westcombe Park who will be preparing for another season in the National Leagues.

Last season’s National 2 East matches between the sides were both minor classics, with only a last-gasp try denying Colchester a win in the first fixture in Kent, Westcombe Park squeaking home 39-36.

The return fixture at Raven Park in March saw Colchester get their revenge, beating Combe by 45 points to 41 in a 13-try thriller. More of the same this weekend would be very welcome!

With impeccable timing, England’s second pool match in the women’s rugby world cup - against Samoa - gets underway at 5pm making it a perfect double-header.

But the rugby action actually starts on Friday night as The Ravens play Maldon’s first team (kick-off 7.45).

The 2s should be fielding a significantly stronger team than the one which came up short in their pre-season match against Mistley a couple of weeks ago when many players were unavailable, not least because of two weddings taking place that day!

The thrills continue on Sunday afternoon when the Cavaliers entertain the Kings at Raven Park (kick-off 2pm).
