Weekend preview: Amersham next for unbeaten Col

With promotion safely in the bag, the priority for Colchester is now to go through the season unbeaten, and the next challenge on that front is Saturday’s match at Amersham.

Colchester confirmed their elevation back to National League 2 last weekend with a dramatic home victory over Sudbury, combined with defeat for second placed Letchworth, their only rivals for automatic promotion.

With just two fixtures left to play, Colchester are determined to keep their season-long, 20-match winning run going.

Saturday’s game at Amersham’s picturesque ground high on the Chiltern hills (kick-off 3pm) will be far from easy, as the hosts still have plenty to play for, sitting as they do one place and five points off the bottom of Regional 1 South East.

“We’ve got two tough challenges coming up,” said head coach Mike Haywood. “Amersham away - they’re near the bottom of the league and they’re fighting to stay up. They’re not a team that are just going to roll over.

“It would be amazing for us to go up unbeaten but we know as a group how tough that’s going to be and we’re excited for the challenge.”

When the sides met in the reverse fixture back in December, Colchester won 39-12, but it was a hard-fought match throughout.

Colchester look likely to make a number of changes to their team with Charlie Friend and Ardal Yallop unavailable, while Gabe Jones, Henry Newman and Jacob Bodkin all went off with injuries against Sudbury.

On another very busy weekend for the club, there are six men’s and women’s teams in action.

The Ravens entertain West Norfolk at Raven Park (kick-off 3pm) in Counties 1 Eastern Counties, keen to avenge their 30-5 defeat in the away fixture earlier in the season.

The As are on the road, as they play Ipswich 2s (kick-off 2.30). The sides are third and fourth in Eastern Counties Greene King Division 1 South, so a competitive match looks certain.

The same can be said for the match between the Cavaliers and Ipswich YM Hawks, the sides third and first respectively in division 2. The match kicks-off at Raven Park at 3pm.

The Kings are also in home action as they play Brighton and Hove Sea Serpents in a league match (kick-off 1pm).

Then on Sunday, the Iceni, fresh from their heartbreaking narrow defeat at league leaders Bedford Blues Women, now play the side in second place in the table, Stamford Women (kick-off at Raven Park 2pm TBC).

With the season approaching its conclusion, there will not be too many more chance to come and support your Colchester teams!
