Every weekend and most weekday evenings at Colchester RFC, when the guys and gals in black and red take to the field to play or train, there’s another dedicated team working tirelessly behind the scenes – our volunteers. They may not always wear the match kit, but without them the club simply wouldn’t run.
Each year the club recognises three volunteers, whose name will be entered on our volunteers’ board. This season those three volunteers are:
Steve Ferguson: he runs the Touch rugby sessions, coaches our young players, helps with the gate on match days and will volunteer his time when needed.
Zoe Goate: she has co-managed the Iceni alongside her sister Emma ever since it’s renaissance in 2019. Her passion for the women’s game has resulted in Colchester having an amazing women’s team of which we should all be proud. The success of the Iceni has attracted new sponsorship to the club and seen the green shoots of girls’ rugby at the club.
Jeff Patterson: he simply loves rugby and every weekend you will see him running the line for any team that will have him! He has mostly been seen with the 1st XV and learned the skills of being a ‘fourth official’ when we were last in Nat 2 – happily he will be able to resume that post in the 2026 -27 season.
All of our volunteers don’t just support the club – THEY ARE THE CLUB. To everyone who gives their time, energy and heart – thank you. Rugby in Colchester is stronger, prouder and more united because of you.
Thanks you - Maggie
