Sunshine, Mud, and Momentum: Iceni Run Riot in 35–0 Shutout

After a few weeks away from competitive action due to rescheduled fixtures and the dreaded weather conditions that had affected everyone, Iceni were finally ready to return to the field. With their opponents sitting just three points below them in the league table, this was always going to be an important fixture. The sun was shining, the wind had eased, and after a tense wait to confirm the pitch was playable, Iceni made the trip to Wymondham ready to get back to business.

The opening exchanges showed just how evenly matched the two sides were. Heavy mud and standing water made handling difficult, leading to mistakes from both teams as they adjusted to the slippery conditions. Despite this, Iceni remained composed and committed to their game plan. The forwards carried hard into contact, showing excellent support at the breakdown—clear evidence of training translating into match play. This strong platform allowed the backs to attack with confidence, and after 16 minutes the pressure paid off. Quick ball found Lucy Philpot in space, and she powered through to score under the posts, giving Iceni a 5–0 lead.

It took time for the next score to arrive as both teams battled the conditions and defended well. However, just before half-time, a neat piece of play between Ellie Woodward and Zoe Goate saw Goate cross the line at 37 minutes. Iceni went into the break with a deserved 10–0 advantage.

After the pitch swap, Iceni showed real maturity. Heads stayed calm, structures remained solid, and although substitutions were rolled on and off throughout the second half, there was no disruption to the flow or intensity of the performance. Iceni continued to demonstrate why they belong in this new league.

The second half started strongly, with Katie Gemal scoring early to extend the lead to 15–0. Soon after, a penalty provided another opportunity. Keeping things simple with a clear KISS approach, basic hands from Ellie Carter saw her break the line before being brought down. Crucially, Jess Brennan was on hand in support to finish the move and score, making it 20–0.

Moments later Chloe scored to help push the score to 25–0. The scoring didn’t stop there as the Iceni were firmly on a roll and continued to play composed, effective rugby. Sticking to the basics and trusting the system, Ellie Woodward and Zoe Goate both crossed the line to round off a dominant performance and secure a comprehensive 35–0 victory.

The league table still has everything to play for. This result keeps Iceni in third place, but with only two points separating them from second—and Iceni holding a game in hand having played nine matches to Stamford’s ten—the final five fixtures promise an exciting run-in. Where will Iceni finish in this new, higher league? Make your guesses now!

If you’re still unsure, make sure you’re there to see it unfold. Iceni are back in action on 8th March against old friends Ipswich Rugby Club Women. Come early and enjoy a pre-game two-course lunch. To book, email clairecrfc@outlook.com.
