Saturday preview: It’s a Christmas cracker at Raven Park!

Colchester supporters are looking forward to the perfect pick-me-up after the disappointment of the Guernsey trip, as Raven Park stages a triple bill with all the Christmas trimmings on Saturday.
The first team return to action after a three week break as they take on Havant in National 2 East (kick-off 3pm) while the 2s are also at home as they entertain local rivals Ipswich (2pm).
Add in the fabled Colchester Rugby Club Christmas lunch, expected to be attended by around 250 supporters, and it should be the perfect prelude to the festive season on and off the pitch.
As has been well documented, Colchester’s match against Guernsey fell victim to Storm Darragh, with a red weather warning and 75mph winds on the Channel Islands forcing the fixture to be postponed until February 22nd.
Given the team had a rest weekend the previous week, The Blacks will be raring to get back on the pitch having not had a run out since the home defeat to Worthing on November 23rd.
Havant are ninth in the league, winning five of their 12 matches. Last time out, the Hampshire side lost narrowly at home to high-flying Dorking 25-28. Like Colchester, they have picked up five try bonus points and three losing bonus points this season.
The Ravens will want to get back to winning ways after their closely fought defeat at Bury last week as they play Ipswich on pitch 6.
Ipswich are currently second in the Counties 1 Eastern Counties league. The Suffolk side have won three and lost three on the road this season.
To complete a busy fixture list at Raven Park, the Cavaliers play Bury 4s on pitch 5 (kick-off 2pm), while the As travel to Felixstowe (2pm).
This is the last senior men’s rugby to be played at Raven Park this year, so the perfect time for members and supporters to show their support for the lads, and to enjoy some Christmas cheer at lunch and in the bar.
Expect plenty of chat amongst the 50 or so intrepid supporters who travelled to Guernsey last weekend, most of whom had their journeys home significantly delayed as the island’s airport shut for two days.
Chairman Karl O’Brien was quick to pay tribute to those fans – many of whom will be attending Saturday’s lunch and who will no doubt be swapping “war stories”.
“I really would like to thank the supporters – they’ve gone above and beyond,” said Karl this week.
Let’s hope the supporters and players alike get an early Christmas present!
