As a result of a brilliant display of both attacking and defending rugby the Iceni scored no less than 14 unanswered tries against Diss Vixens on a mainly dry Sunday afternoon at Raven Park. Half of these scores, a magnificent 7, were claimed by centre Chloe Mills, a fine solo performance.
Coach Grahm Seal said afterwards “ I’m over the moon! Danny and I have been working on winning the breakdowns after the last game against Southwold when they were about 50/50 and today the Iceni won them all!”
It took the Iceni just 25 minutes to score 25 points, a fantastic start bearing in mind they were playing against the wind. In that time and as a result of an excellent share of ball retention Chloe scored three times due to her speed and elusive running whilst the other players to cross the whitewash were Queenie Lomboy and Allie Morris whose try was her first for Colchester.
o
Skipper Yas Amber back from injury led by example to crash through to score the next converted try to take the lead to 32 –0 before Chloe added two more tries to her haul before half time.
At the interval Danny Whiteman brought his “bomb squad” off the bench, the Iceni jubilant at their 44 point lead.
The scoring in the second half was led by No 8 Katie Gemal when she received the ball from scrum half Kat Richardson and crashed over the line. Unluckily her conversion attempt bounced off the post but moments later when Chloe ran in her sixth try Katie’s kick was successful.
Later, following a successful scrum on Diss’s 22 line, Yas got the ball to score another converted try under the posts. Fortunes changed momentarily when Tracy Seal received a yellow card from the referee for a high tackle and had to leave the pitch for 10 minutes.
This setback did not daunt the Iceni and they continued to impress with their set play and in the loose. At one point The Vixens attacked close to the clubhouse but were unlucky not to score as their last pass was forward.
With 10 minutes left the Iceni wrapped up the game with a second try for Katie, Chloe’s seventh and back on from the bench Kat Richardson finishing off a great break by Jess Sydenham.
Player of the Match was Chloe Mills and the Under the Radar Award went to open side flanker Mall Bolter. The Iceni’s next opponents are at Ipswich and any supporters are most welcome.
