Iceni avenged their close defeat at West Norfolk earlier in the season with a stunning display of high-performance rugby, scoring ten unanswered tries to gain a brilliant victory by 60 points to 3.
Their attack was deadly, often scoring from moves started in their own half whilst their defence was rock solid so that the visitors were unable to score any tries, just one penalty.
Right at the start of the match fly half in the left corner Zoe Goate scored under the posts after a mazy run with Madison Seal converting to make it 7-0. Not long afterwards, Chloe Mills received the ball after a successful Iceni scrum and used her pace to make ground before offloading to Zoe who crossed the line for her second try.
Not content with that, Zoe was fed the ball by scrum half Jess Brennan shortly afterwards and scored her hat-trick so that the Iceni were 17 points ahead in as many minutes of the match. More pressure by Colchester through direct running by skipper Yas Amber and Amber Frost earned them a scrum on West Norfolk’s ten metre line. The forwards good push got a clean ball to Jess who fed Zoe who put in a good pass to Chloe who sped through the defence to score her second try.
22-0 was the score as half time arrived and the coaches decided to bring on all five substitutes off the bench and in the second half there was no let-up in the quality of play.
Zoe’s twin sister Emma soon got an attack going at the restart offloading, to prop Queenie Lomboy who used her strength to power through the defence before picking up an injury. Soon after she had been attended to Jess quickly tapped the ball and sped up field offloading to Chloe, whose weaving run took her over the line for her second try which Casey Brown converted making the score 29-0.
Shortly after there was a lineout to the visitors close to Iceni’s try line, but great work by second row Tracy Seal turned over the ball and Colchester attacked again but, unfortunately, they gave away a penalty which the West Norfolk scrum half converted to get them on the scoreboard 29-3.
This slight setback seemed to galvanise the Iceni to play even harder and within the next ten minutes Zoe scored twice to notch up an impressive haul of five tries. No 8 Madison Seal converted the last of these and then had her own moment of glory. Using her strength and agility she started and finished a great move with several of the team using slick handling to fool the defence. She converted her try to bring the score to 48-3.
Caroline Sutton-Reid and Lucy Yendel mounted several forays into the West Norfolk half. In one such move Caroline offloaded to Yas, who made the hard yards before passing to Chloe, who sprinted 40 metres to score her hat-trick try.
The Iceni finished in style, moving the ball first right then left for Kay Blackman to score a fine try in the corner making them victorious by 60 points to 3. Woman of the match was Emma Goate for her energetic display both in attack and defence.
