The Iceni put behind them the loss of the previous week and earned a brilliant victory over Woodbridge on Sunday by 7 tries to 2.
Coach Graham Seal was particularly pleased with the second half performance when the women in black got a couple of long range tries but “good defence didn’t allow the visitors to score at all.”
Iceni kicked off and within a minute after turning over the visitor’s possession scrum half Jess Brennan scored a fine unconverted try. Before long the Iceni were back at the Woodbridge end following a good break by Amber Frost who ran the length of the pitch to score their second unconverted try. This excellent start continued when , shortly after Iceni were given a penalty for a high Woodbridge tackle a quick tap and go by Jess Brennan got the ball to skipper Yas Amber who broke through the defence and scored under the posts. No 8 Katie Gemal added the extras putting the hosts in front 17-0.
Woodbridge rallied after this setback and attacked using their big forwards to make the hard yards, moving the ball to their swift outside centre who scored their first unconverted try.
Not long after this the visitors attacked again after Iceni restarted and, despite a good tackle by Jade Seal, managed to offload to one of their large second rows who piled over the tryline.
Their fly half missed the conversion making the score 17-10. There followed 15 minutes of intense competition between the two sides until Yas again scored a brilliant solo try under the posts which Katie converted making it 24-10.
At half time coach Danny Whiteman rang the changes and replaced 6 women with substitutes which he dubbed “the bomb squad!”
Woodbridge kicked off the second half but were unlucky to sustain injuries to both of their props in the first 5 minutes. These two were replaced by women on the visitor’s bench and the game continued. Before long Iceni overturned the visitor’s advantage from a penalty near the host’s line and Yas Amber used her strength and lightning speed to break through the defence and run the length of the pitch to score a fine converted try.
Woodbridge kicked off again straight to fly half Kat Richardson who moved the ball to Emma Goate who weaved through the defence to score an excellent unconverted try bringing the score to 36-10.
The Iceni were on a high now and renewed their attack from the restart with Jess Brennan almost making it to the opposition tryline after a good break. Scrums and lineouts were being evenly contested and the referee kept good control carefully explaining all of his decisions.
Centre Queenie Lomboy had the final say in this exciting match when, having been moved to the right wing, she sped over the tryline taking one or two defenders with her!
Iceni had triumphed 43-10 and Amber Frost was named Player of the Match receiving an award from club president Keiran Payne and the “Under the radar” award went to Danisha Rajoo for her splendid unseen work rate in the scrum.
