Some people pass through a rugby club.
Others are the club.
Stuart Pritchard was firmly in the second category.
Larger than life in every sense, Stuart wasn’t just part of the furniture; he was part of the spirit of the place. If you were lucky enough to share a touchline (or balcony), a bar, a tour, or a story with him, you’ll know exactly what that means.
Stuart had an extraordinary gift for creating memories. Not always quietly. Not always sensibly. But always memorably. Often with a grin. Sometimes with mischief. Always with warmth.
He understood what a rugby club really is: not just a game played on a Saturday, but a community — built on friendship, loyalty, banter, and shared experience. He welcomed people in and reminded us that rugby is meant to be enjoyed, together.
There will be stories told about Stuart for many years to come — stories that start with “Do you remember when…?” and end in laughter, disbelief, and fond shaking of heads. That is perhaps the greatest legacy any rugby person can leave.
Colchester RFC is richer for having had him.
We are poorer for his absence.
But we are better — and happier — for the memories he gave us.
Stuart Pritchard:
A character.
A friend.
A legend.
Once a Colchester man — always a Colchester man.
