The conditions to play against Stowmarket 3’s were near perfect, although the strong wind made sure the scrum half left his kicking boots in the changing room!
Colchester approached the game with the same determination to win as a team as they have done all season, sticking to the mantra of not giving the opposition a single inch from the first whistle and keeping the ball alive. This along with making full use of the players on the pitch allowed the first of 12 tries within the first 10 minutes.
Full back Jack Lock assumed kicking duties for the day and converted 75% of his attempts; citing the wind as his biggest enemy!
Open play showed the AXV's ability to work as a full team and break through the Stowmarket defence at every opportunity.
Stowmarket showed the home team that they still need to work on their scrum and forced a pair of penalties on their try line which, luckily for Colchester they couldn't turn into a try. The scrums were Colchester’s weakest aspect of the game and are something they need to tighten up on for next season.
Colchester dug deep and won the turn over at the scrum and went back to their open running game which allowed them to score a number of tries in quick succession.
Back row Gary Palmer added to his try count for the season after a number of months soul searching and finally digging deep to ensure his support play lasted for the full length of the pitch, proving that Forwards and Backs can work together.
With the half time break and a few substitutions made for both teams (thanks go to Graham, Ben and the one they call Salad?) Colchester started off slowly and nearly let the opposition through on a couple of occasions. After winning the line out from Stowmarket (Stuart) the tries kept coming from Colchester and the fitness of all the players started to show against the opposition in the last quarter.
Credit goes to Stowmarket for their efforts and hard work during the full 80 minutes, the final score does not show the effort they put in.
Colchester has one more fixture against Clacton on the 21st march to finish the season before a well-deserved break until pre-season training for EC2 league.
