A magnificent display by the A XV earns them promotion and sees them finish the season unbeaten

Colchester A’s final game of the season was against Felixtowe 1st XV which proved a tough fixture when the A’s played them last at the start of the season, only winning 26-23 at their place. However, since the close game the A’s have gone on to score 700 points without losing once in the league, making this year a very successful and historic year not only for the team but the club also.

The sunshine and low winds were perfect for the type of rugby the A’s love playing, within 10 minutes with quick off loading in the tackles saw the A’s skipper Dave Lawrence to dive over the line from a quick penalty. The A’s kept crashing over the line with help from Dean Morgan making cutting lines off of number 10 Adam O’Leary, with Dean going over 3 times in the game along with second row Will Foster. Midway through the first half Colchester turned over a Felixstowe scrum with Jake Crowther, Graham MacCallum and Jack Buxton piling on the pressure only for the ball to bobble out to scrum half Matt Parker to draw the last man and off-load to Adam O’Leory for another score. All the while Sam Connor kept kicking over the points only missing a rare few. A line break this time from Stephen Mcmanamon only to get pulled down however a quick long pass from Matt Parker straight to Alex Harvey at outside centre only for him to selflessly draw the full back to offload to winger Sam Shouksmith to score again under the posts.

After a quick team talk from token ginger Dean Tully (Rich Holland was on Holiday) the A’s went on to score straight after the kick off with a break from Will Foster again, and an almost carbon copy try scored again by Mike Howlett, crawling over the line after just being dragged short, the conversion taken by hooker Graham MacCallum. A few substitutions enabled the A’s to keep up the pressure. Felixstowe rarely got out of their half and when they shipped the ball out wide they were only smashed back by Josh Beaumont on the wing. Felixstowe managed to score one try off a driving maul but failed to convert. Colchester hit back again with substitute James Pearce touching down in the corner, once again set up by Alex Harvey. The scrum and lineout kept performing well with sub James Fisher adding extra impetus to the pack and quicker ball from the ruck for substitute 9 Sam Hopkins to distribute well, with one box kick gaining the A’s 30 metres. The A’s got close again in the last minute but for the first time failed to score when in Felixstowe half. The final whistle went and the A’s finished the season unbeaten 74-5.

Thanks all to who came and watch, special thanks to Rich Holland for giving up his Tuesdays and Thursdays to coach us along with James Fisher and Andrew Sutcliffe. Thanks to all the photos and support, on to next year!
