Colchester maintain pressure on league leaders Eton Manor with a 13 try win over Old Prorians

Colchester achieved a comprehensive victory with a thirteen try bonanza of unanswered tries against league newcomers Old Priorians. Fly half David Higgins converted all but three of these scores earning the Blacks a bonus point plus building on their impressive scoring record this season.
The visitors from west London played their hearts out right to the final whistle but were no match for the home team in any phases of the game.
Colchester fielded a strong team with a couple of changes from the previous game. Charlie Thorogood returned to hooker replacing injured Dan Brennan and the gap left by injured Danny Whiteman was filled by colt Harry Gozzett making his first team debut.
After a hesitant start Colchester got into their stride when lock Graeme Hay burst down the middle and offloaded to No 8 James McCrae who scored under the posts. Scrum half Matt Wadling did much to influence the next score when he took a quick tap penalty for centre James Greene to touch down by the posts.
Soon Colchester’s backs were running rampant with the hard-working forwards giving them a plentiful supply of ball. Soon outside centre Matt Smith got the first of his two scores but, not to be outdone by the backs, the forwards gathered the high ball from the restart and prop Jay Hatcher made fifty metres before feeding Hay who outstripped the defence to score under the posts.
Prop James Mitchell came off the bench for Hatcher to take a well- earned rest just before Smith got his second score with a fine individual effort running almost the length of the pitch to score despite several players trying to tackle him. This brought the halftime score to 49 – 0 with all seven tries converted; a virtuoso kicking display by Higgins.
Crucially the Blacks did not ease off in the second half adding another six tries despite the despairing efforts of the visitors. Crozier scored his second try after running down the wing, chipping ahead, making an excellent pick up and diving over in the corner. Next on the scoreboard was flanker Ollie Pickett after an eighty metre dash ended with a try under the posts.
Coaches Anthony O’Riordan and Nic Lloyd rang the changes with George Liversidge on for Gozzett and Gregor Irvine for Wadling. Next Colchester’s forwards took advantage of Old Priorians’ weakened scrum when their tighthead prop was yellow-carded and pushed it back over the tryline for McCrae to claim his second score. It was now 66-0 but Thorogood kept up the pace when he burst through a lineout and scored the eleventh try.
Two more scores completed the rout and the final whistle was greeted with loud applause from the large home crowd.
