Another bonus point win to add to the tally

Colchester’s rugby team successfully stormed fortress North Walsham who had only lost once in the last year with an emphatic display of running rugby in perfect weather conditions in front of a stunned home crowd. Their try tally was eight to North Walsham’s four with fly half David Higgins adding three penalties in what must surely have been his best game ever for the Essex side. This bonus point victory by Colchester keeps them in second place in the league closing in on top side Eton Manor.
North Walsham started both halves well but couldn’t sustain their efforts against a rampant Colchester who played a fast and furious team game. The home side’s fullback James Knight opened proceedings with a quick try converted by fly half Daviid Treglown to which Higgins soon replied with a penalty when a North Walsham player went over the top in a ruck.
Renewing their attack North Walsham rumbled forward from a lineout and centre Will Hodgson claimed a converted try to the right of the posts; again Higgins replied with a penalty bringing the score after 20 minutes to 14-6.
Colchester’s forwards began to assert their authority in the set pieces and, following a successful catch in the lineout by lock Liam Pickett, the ball was moved to skipper Calum Irvine who raced towards the opposition’s corner. Referee Gavin Scott then yellow-carded the home side’s right winger for a professional foul. As he left the pitch for a 10 minute break, Colchester forwards attacked North Walsham’s try line ending in prop James Mitchell claiming a fine unconverted try.
This score heralded a purple patch for the men in black and three more tries were added in quick succession, one by their fast right winger Dave Brennan, one by skipper Irvine well up in support and another by Brennan who was ably assisted by dynamo flanker Danny Whiteman.
North Walsham managed to reply with one try by their right winger before the break bringing the interval score to 19-32. Colchester’s coaching team then made some changes. Prop Jerone Awesu replaced the injured Joe McMillan, Damien Brambley came off the bench so Brennan could be rested and, before long, Ollie White replaced Liam Pickett in the forwards.
In the second half Colchester cut loose with a fine display of handling and kicking, notching up four tries and a penalty to the home side’s solitary try. Scorers were: a second try for Brennan returning refreshed to the fray; fleet-footed centre James Green; Higgins after a fine dash from the halfway line; No.8 James McRae touching down after a swift interchange of passes and Awesu, combining well with Brambley who ran in from the halfway line.
The final score was 26-61, a tremendous victory for Colchester over a spirited Norfolk side in front of a large crowd of disappointed home spectators.
