U11 Gladiators Cup Finalists at Woodbridge Dev Festival
Sunday 12 September
The Gladiators attended the Woodbridge Development festival on Sunday 12 September and played great rugby to get to their first Cup Final having been undefeated in the pool stages. It is unfair to pick out any one player from the squad of 12 as they all played an equal part and gave everything to the last second of the final.
The Gladiators quickly developed a fast pressing game, out tackling or rucking their opposition at every contact and then moving the ball freely away from the ruck or mall. To a man they ran with confidence culminating in the try of the day against the Home side which involved inter passing from the whole team with such quick hands that even the referee was left far behind applauding.
Colchester v Ipswich YM - W 5:0
Colchester v Wymondham - W 7:1
Colchester v Woodbridge - W 9:0
Colchester v Stowmarket - W 7:0
Cup Final v North Walsham - L 0:4
The Gladiators came up against a very good side in North Walsham with several exceptional players who caught them a little off the pace from the kick off. Walsham scored 3 tries in the first 4 minutes and looked like they would run away with the final. Colchester then rallied and regained their fast line speed, making strong tackles on much the larger opponents and regularly counter rucked. Walsham defended strongly and made several try saving tackles to maintain their lead at half time.
The second half started with Colchester showing great heart and never taking a backward step despite several heavy knocks and bumps. The ball was moved quickly again and Colchester were stopped short several more times. The last play of this enthralling match summed up the match with Walsham turning over the Colchester player on their own try line and then moving the length of
the pitch to score at full arms length despite a heroic last ditch tackle.
Dan and I would like to congratulate all the players for an epic day of rugby and look forward to seeing just how good this side will become over the next few months. We must also thank all the parents for the support and encouragement given to all the players over a long day (Adam thanks for bringing the family sweet tin!).
