Girls overcome nerves to demolish Alleynians

This was a match where everything clicked. You can tell that the girls were apprehensive as they made ready to take on yet another unknown opposition. Sudbury did all they could to make the girls welcome. As they took to the field resplendent in their kit, this unbiased observer could see the opposition visibly recoil. A steady warm-up completed in tight unison, showed we meant business.

The first couple of minutes showed adrenaline was high as knock-ons and unforced errors abounded. However, it wasn't long until the first score. That seemed to galvanise the girls and they romped to a half time lead of 27-0. This was probably the best I have seen the team play, with very secure set piece play from a bigger and dominant forward pack. Sudbury/Colchester won nearly all their scrums and lineouts and took several against the head. Behind the pack, the backs were free to keep ball alive and dart forward with real menace and effect.

At the turn, the opposition kicked long, the ball was not secured and Alleynians snatched their only try of the match which was converted quickly. Whilst this suggested a possible fight back might occur, it only served to encourage Sudbury/Colchester to re-double their efforts and concentrate more, now that they were playing into a strong headwind.

Sudbury/Colchester, stung by this rare score, went forward with ruthless intent and there was a score every five minutes or so. Alleynians were solid in defence and tackled superbly. They should be credited with never giving up and playing from start to finish in a very positive spirit; a lesson to all teams facing such stiff opposition.

Ending the game 61 - 7 victors, Sudbury/Colchester played very good rugby and were strong in every facet. Link play between forwards and backs meant the ball was kept alive and ensured the opposition were unable to predict from where the next attack would come. Set piece play was very accurate and dominant. This was also a tremendous display of rucking and securing turnover ball.

All in all, a very successful day at the office.

Congratulations to all who played, a massive well done!
