U13 Ravens V Hadleigh
A tough morning against a Cup side
Colchester u13's Romans v Hadleigh
With Hadleigh only having one team this was always going to be a tough fixture for the Ravens and with several of the selected squad also unavailable the task was made enough tougher.
Our Romans group played the same team in a competitive game in the Suffolk Cup. Despite facing a near full strength group our boy's showed perseverance and enjoyment as they continually battled against the Hadleigh wave of attacks. The set pieces were an even contest with both sides securing their own possession, but the deciding factor was the pace and strength of Hadleigh backs once they found space. One missed tackle was all it took for Hadleigh to capitalise.
Despite this mismatch we valiantly tried to take the game to Hadleigh with each possession, often we would build momentum only for Hadleigh to take advantage of our errors. For the forwards it was an arm wrestle at times with every one carrying the ball well in the face of strong Hadleigh defence. Matt Johnson distributed the ball well to release Jack Emmerson and the backs. In midfield Kieran K released George McFarlane who ran with a direct purpose all game allowing Finn Macbrayne and Mikey Allum the opportunity out wide. The pattern of the game developed - we would carry the ball, Hadleigh would force us into a mistake and then they would run the ball back. It has to be said that the scoreline does not reflect the defencive effort that was displayed with lots of solid tackling demonstrated ( notabley from George McFarlane) and it was just the odd mistake and missed tackle that allowed Hadleigh to score regularly.
Right up until the final whistle we strove for that at all elusive score but could not cross the try line.
Despite the scoreline this was a determined performance against a team that has aquited itself well against other A team opposition and is only the third loss this season across the Raven's fixtures.
