U15 v Brentwood

Continued ONE TEAM policy starts to see rewards

After a last minute fixture change we took a group of 21 down to Brentwood where we played 3 20 minute games. Logistics were tested to ensure all players had equal playing time.
GAME 1 -
Brentwood make a positive start at home and are quicker to settle into their game plan but they met with good defence against big runners.
Our speed at the breakdown pays off and we win an early turnover.
Following a secure lineout there is a good move in the centres but the ball is spilt in contact.
Our defence is organised with good line speed. However we lose 2 scrums; not sure how.
Brentwood attack out wide but a good tackle George McFarlane allows Nathan Elmer to pick the ball up and with a quick pass he feeds Kai.
Converted Jack L
We seem to switch off at the restart and a knock on gives brentwood possession and territory. Their pressure culminates in a penalty as we contest the ruck for too long.
Brentwood look to catch and drive at the lineout but good body positions forces them to go to the backs. Their 10 spots that we have no cover defence and a good chip sees them score close to the posts
With our heads back in the game we execute a good restart with continued pressure we force them into mistake as we win the majority of contact areas.
A well worked catch and drive from lineout sees us gain several metres which puts the backs on the front foot.
Good hands and we recycle the ball well as forwards work hard from breakdown to breakdown. A great line Alex G pierces the defence, yet more quick ball with secure handling sees George McF score.
Forwards continue to dominate and set good momentum for that backs. A floated passes leads to a Brentwood interception. As they get behind our defence we have to work hard to halt their progress. We continue to contest the breakdowns and win a turnover through George W.
Good interplay between  fwds and back moves us close to the line but we knock on just short of line.
Good pressure forces Brentwood to kick.  Another good catch and drive at the lineout is followed by a good grubber from Jack L. A good kick chase puts pressure on the covering defender and Jack L pounces on the loose ball and  scores.
Again we put pressure on the Brentwood players which leads to sustained possession again a slight knock on returns the ball to Brentwood.
George McF benefits from short clearance kicks and he weaves his way to the try line. Jack L adds the conversion
Game 2
Sees us make 6 changes to ensure even game time.

Good take Lewis T from the restart gets us off to a good start and we start to go through the phases but we knock on in contact under pressure from the Brentwood tackles.
Possession and territory ebbs and flows and we are unable unlucky as we chase through.Good reactions to 22 restart and we secure own possession. A solid scrum allows Jack L,  George and Lewis T to link well.
Positional changes follow as Kye Simpson  hobbles off so  Jack moves to 9, Toby moves to 10, Lewis to 15 and Kai goes on at 12
Brentwood enjoy a long period of possession and a couple of missed tackles 5m out sees them score
Brentwood try.
Brentwood just seem to have the advantage in terms of possession and territory as their runners find the edges of our tackles and defence. Brentwood's mobile and powerful forwards shows very good footwork and a series of good side-steps and he finds his way to the try line. Again their 10 slots the extra points
Brentwood continue to enjoy possession and only some last ditch tackles keep them at bay. Good clearance from off the top lineout move from Toby allows us to clear our lines, however Brentwood edge the contact areas and a series of pick and drives sees them drive through the middle to score.
Game 3
This now becomes a logistical challenge as we rotate players in an attempt to create even game time- now we have more players in a variety of new positions. The reshuffle puts us back on the front foot and our first foray sees us held up over the line. From the resulting 5m scrum McKenzie drives from number 8 and crashes through the tackles to score.
Ball held up.

Brentwood look to counter but great cover from Nathan Elmer stops their progress. Scrums continue to be keenly contested but we often have a solid platform for the backs to attack from. Spotting the gaps we counter from our own 22 and good hands allows Kai to break a tackle and he is away!!!
the changes continue and following a positive period of forward work the backs enjoy the space this creates and we put the ball all the way along the back line, with Nathan G scoring outwide..
Colchester defence remains  resolute and denies Brentwood time and possession.
Couple of penalties at the ruck sees us pushed back as Brentwood look to make the final score but our defence is key and we secure yet another turnover. A good kick through from Kye and equal kick chase sends brentwood back to 22 but they are able to clear.

This has been another positive game as we operate the ONE TEAM selection policy and constantly rotate players to ensure even game time. We seem to find the right balance as our handling starts to be more cohesive. A solid lineout platform (Good work Josh Giles) means we have secure possession that the backs can work from. In attack we are being ore creative and reacting to individual creativity but today our defence was crucial and brutal at times.
