Colchester U15s 10 Southend 19
Excitement all round as the U15s take on Southend under the floodlights
The under 15s kicked off this much anticipated floodlit fixture against opponents with a formidable track record this season. In the early minutes Colchester matched the visitors in the tackle and with ball in hand with both Kirk, Slater and Tyler making significant yardage. Hyde made a decisive tackle on his opposite number which stifled a set move and rallied his troops to take the game to the visitors.
Ten minutes minutes into the tense contest a tap penalty taken left, then two phases right for the omnipresent Downes and Hyde to both break tackles leaving Kirk to sprint over the line and score.
Southend edged back in front from turnover ball securing a converted try. Colchester applied pressure and forced a number of errors
surprising the visitors with the level of urgency at the breakdown. The next ten minutes saw Southend camped in Colchester's half. From a scrum Southend used their numbers and took their second try.
At the turnaround the hardworking Coates caught kick off and three phases and a jinking run from Kirk saw the Ravens in their opponents half. With the wind on their backs Colchester worked their way upfield. But Southend breached the line for a long range converted try.
With the Colchester scrum now functioning perfectly Southend's pack were going backwards on their put in. This gave a platform for Kirk to crash through in the centre only to be stopped short. More pressure from Colchester led to a well deserved try for Hyde in the corner.
The final whistle blew on this highly entertaining, high intensity game with both Colchester's players and fans extremely proud of their performance.
