Close game ends in defeat for Colchester

A case of the one that got away. Despite having the vast majority of territory and possession, Colchester were unable to defeat a hard working and willing Gravesend side who showed the away team that taking your opportunities when presented is key to winning games.

Colchester kicked off and spent the next 20 minutes within the Gravesend half of the pitch; often within site of the opposition try line. With the Colchester scrum dominant and forwards and backs interchanging well, the away side enjoyed much of the ball but due to robust Gravesend defence and poor decision making, were unable to break through. An early penalty chance was missed and clear try scoring opportunities were squandered (players held up, knock-ons close to the line, poor choice of pass, etc). Colchester were then made to pay as a series of penalties then allowed Gravesend to progress up the pitch and from their first real attacking platform, a line break resulted in the first (unconverted) score of the game. (5-0) Colchester responded well but again were unable to cross the try line; another kickable penalty chance being missed summing up the first half proceedings from the Colchester point of view.
Half Time: Gravesend 5 Colchester 0

An early missed Gravesend penalty from in front of the posts was soon followed by an intercepted pass and breakaway try from Gravesend to extend the home side's lead to 10-0. Colchester again had much the better ball possession going forward but struggled to find the vital pass. The away side's sole reward was a close range score from second row Ben Brown which was converted by Ali Clack . (10-7) Colchester's last chance came when Enzo McIntyre crossed the line only to have the score disallowed for a marginal call in midfield. A converted penalty chance with the last kick of the game slightly extended the points difference and ensured victory for the home side.
Full Time: Gravesend 13 Colchester 7
