Solid Defensive Display brings its Reward

A youthful looking Colchester side travelled to their counterparts at Cambridge and emerged victorious (just) in a hard fought and competitive game of Colts rugby. For many periods of the game, Colchester were forced to defend close to their own line as the larger Cambridge team enjoyed good territory and possession; but robust tackling and good discipline showed that hard work on the training pitch brings benefit on match day. A try (unconverted) from Colchester prop John Lynch opened the scoring before Cambridge wasted a glorious opportunity by knocking on in the process of touching down. Back to back Cambridge scrums and forward pressure brought the home side a close range converted score before Josh Clark found his way over to return the lead back to Colchester (again unconverted). As half time approached, the hard working Cambridge side returned the favour to bring the interval score to 14-10. The second half brought a similar pattern to the first with Cambridge having the better of territory but is was Colchester who scored the only further points of the match when Lynch again was on hand to cross for the winning score.

An excellent game of rugby from both sides; coach Steve Wright being enthusiastic in what he saw, saying "this was a well deserved win against bigger opposition. Our defensive structure was sound and the whole team worked together as a unit to achieve the success. Maintaining the progress shown already will be key to having a successful season".
