A game to forget for Colchester who came up against a strong and powerful Ipswich YM side in the first round of the National Colts Cup. With the away side containing many under 17 players, the team were unable to deal with the physicality and direct running of the YM forwards; who regularly broke the gain line and imposed themselves much more effectively on the game. Colchester found themselves three scores down very quickly and conceded tries at fairly regular intervals throughout the game. A half-time deficit of 25-0 progressed to a heavy 47-0 defeat, compounded by a very unfortunate and unnecessary red card very late in the game. Fair play to Ipswich YM who completely deserved their win on the day.
Coach Sean O'Sullivan was reflective in defeat, saying: "We shouldn't read too much into the game and margin of defeat. But as a squad, we need to develop a game plan that allows us to compete above our weight and perform at a higher level than what we did today".
