Colchester travelled to Cambridge for their latest Eastern Counties Cup fixture and emerged victorious in a very close game that, from Colchester's point of view, should not have been so. A very competitive first half saw Cambridge open the scoring before tries from centre Will Blakemore, hooker Nic Woodhead and centre Mikey Johnston developed the away side a 19-7 lead. Cambridge responded in turn with two quick fire tries before second row Rory Miller and Blakemore again crossed to leave the half-time score as Cambridge 19 Colchester 31. Both sides tightened up their defences in the second period; and although Colchester scored again (a hat-trick try from Blakemore), Cambridge enjoyed the better possession and territory to score twice more to bring the final score to 33-38. Whilst there were some good line breaks and support play in evidence from Colchester, there were also times of poor decision making and rash play when playing the percentage game would have yielded better dividends. A good win for Colchester, but still lots to develop and work on.
