Colchester were disappointed to lose to Westcliff in their opening round-robin match of the LV cup. Despite taking an early lead through a converted score by second row Henry Williams, Colchester's forwards struggled against the larger Westcliff pack who had much the better of the breakdown and scrum throughout the game. It was a similar story at the lineout where Colchester could not regularly maintain possession from their own ball which greatly affected the home side's ability to create a platform with which to develop play. Although Colchester scored two further tries from centre Fawaz Olabooye and winger Elliott Hinton, the home backline was not as slick as in previous weeks and this disrupted Colchester's rhythm going forward.
Fair play to Westcliff who deserved their win on the day.
Colchester Backs Coach Julian Clarke said "in good conditions for passing rugby, we didn't produce what we know we can do in training. As a team we must reflect on this and further develop an improved team structure going forward"
