Colchester travelled to Bury on this cold Saturday afternoon welcoming Alfie Walsh, Charlie Thorogood, George Liversidge and Rob Pickard back to the team after their stint in the 1st XV Squad.
Bury’s front 5 proved a very organised outfit as they continuously attacked a very determined Colchester defence. Bury’s first try came from a driving maul from 10 metres out which was subsequently converted. Owen Herbert made a superb run from the Colchester 22 and through the Bury defensive line only to be brought down by a great cover tackle by the fullback. Unfortunately the ball went forward and Bury were able to clear the line.
Two yellows cards were awarded after a bit of hand bags, one for the Bury Captain and the other for the Colchester Hooker. The score line stayed at 7 – 0 for the majority of the first half as Bury missed a penalty kick. However with 5 minutes to go another try came from Bury's driving maul, which was successfully converted.
Half Time score Colchester 0 Bury 14
Colchester were continually camped in their own 22 for the first 15 minutes of the second half due to handling errors and good defence from Bury. Bury managed to cross the line again with a rolling maul from 5 metres out. Score now 21-0
With runs coming from Liversidge and Goodbourn in the centre of the field Colchester battled their way up the pitch only to be thwarted in due course. After a short period of time in the Bury 22 their lines were cleared and Colchester were forced to defend a line out on our 5 metre line. Bury then went over with another driving maul and the score was now 28-0.
Determined Colchester were allowed to break and away they went to the Bury 10 metre line and their momentum continued with quick hands out to the left and Owen Herbert showed his unrivalled pace to go around 3 defenders and score a well deserved try for Colchester.
A very competitive game and played in good spirit.
