With many A XV players migrating over to the Ravens to compete at this higher level you would be forgiven for thinking this might not be a straight forward game. However, the mixed Ravens and A XV squad performed past expectations, including those of Paul Summerson who was astounded by his team’s performance. The team was led out by debutant Captain Richard Chadwick with the assistance of the pack leader Sam Trott.
The game was a good contest for both teams throughout and was played like a local derby. Eleven tries were scored by Colchester in total with Bury only being able to cross the line on two occasions.
The first of Colchester’s tries came from Owen Herbert for his first and hopefully not final game for the side this year as he is off to the Isle of Wight to start his teaching career.
Ex Colts fly half Alex Peterson started at scrum half but moved to fly half during the game and managed to cross the try line on several occasions and showed that he has a wise head on his young shoulders. A new centre partnership of Kappa and Jon Perry proved impregnable throughout and totally the opposite when Colchester were in attack.
The most emotional reaction for one of the tries during the match was from lock forward Elliot Castle as he crossed the line. He couldn’t believe his luck!! But then moments later he found space on the wing in his own 22 and then had to run it out all the way to the try line, dodging the young Bury winger.
Final score: Colchester 72 Bury 12.
