We fielded 12 Youth (U13s through to U18) sides this Sunday, albeit the Colts played the Colts. Match Reports attached

Luton U16 0 – Colchester U16A 56
Colchester U16's travelled to Bedfordshire to take on Luton in the first game of the New Year.
From the start Colchester looked threatening and whilst Luton were competitive throughout(especially in the forwards) Colchester had too many attacking threats to be contained. A fantastic display of running rugby entertained a good crowd as Colchester combined excellent continuity skills with an abrasive well organised defence. Tries from Olobooye(3), Brown(2) , Murray, Cowley, McAllister, Roper and Palmer plus conversions from Parry(2) and Murray ensured an ultimately comfortable 56-0 victory which didn't really do credit to a very creditable performance from a Luton side who performed well until the final whistle.

Romford U16 27 - Colchester U16B 10.
The game commenced with both teams showing great determination, especially at the breakdown. Romford took an early lead with two tries. Colchester got possession and Stefan Georgiou (number 8) ran 30 metres to score Colchester's first try. Romford increased their lead with another three tries in the second half. Colchester scored a further try with some great team work, passing and great pace. Will Allen (number 14) crossed the line

Clacton U16 5 - Colchester U16C 32
Colchester C travelled to Clacton and in windy conditions emerged victorious, but were made to work very hard for the points they scored. With the Clacton forwards posing a constant threat when in possession and at the scrum, Colchester had to defend very well at the breakdown; but utilised their backs to much better effect to create multiple scoing opportunities.
Playing downhill and with the wind in the first half Colchester kicked off and immediately exerted the early pressure. Number 8 Luke Beattie was in the right place to take advantage of good rucking and quick hands to cross for an early score. Only a few minutes later, inside centre Ben Ward dived in after some further slick backline play. The Clacton side then came more into the game and, using their larger forwards to good effect, moved the ball forward through multiple phases. The pressure eventually told when a close range try was scored in the corner. Colchester successfully repelled further Clacton threat and extended the lead before half time when flanker Jack Champion showed his pace to race in; before hooker Niclas Woodhead powered over in the corner just on the whistle (the try being very well converted by outside centre Jonny Spurling). Half Time: Clacton 5 Colchester C 22
The second half was equally competetive with the Colchester forwards having to work very hard to deal with the threat of the Clacton pack. However, with all 19 players involved, play moved into Clacton territory. Inside centre Matt Thompson threw a terrific dummy to score a well worked try before winger Will Goodwin received some quick penalty ball outwide to touch down in the corner. After a Jonny Spurling penalty attempt came back of the woodwork, full back Codie Simpson was unfortunate to have a close range try disallowed. It was a similar outcome when Woodhead made a great burst upfield; being tackled just short, an off-load to supporting Chris Palmer looked to have been grounded only to be ruled out. As the game came to a close, play became fractious and full time came at just about the right time.

Colchester U15A 31 – Ely 0
Colchester started the year with real intent, and off the back of good December wins against Cambridge and Upminster, showed no signs of rustiness in a convincing 31-0 win against Ely.
On a blustery day, Colchester played against the wind in the first half, but put points on the board after just five minutes. After a powerful forward led attack, fly half Ollie Hills burrowed over from short range, and Tom Williams added the extra two points. Williams was soon on the score sheet again after a well worked move saw the Colchester back line create an overlap for him in the corner. Skipper Jordan Milburn finished the half with a fine run from the half way line to touch down under the posts, and with the conversion successful, the half ended 19-0 to the host team.
Ely opened the second half with a fine attack through their outside centre, but Colchester's defence held firm and never really looked like letting in the opposition. The forwards were enjoying complete dominance both at the set piece and in the loose, and the backs always looked dangerous with ball in hand. After clearing up a wayward Ely clearance kick, Williams slipped through the defence and set up second row Ben Bouckley to score Colchester fourth try. Ely defended valiantly, but with a few minutes of the match remaining, Mike Everitt burst through the midfield to add one more, and the final score of 31-0 was a fair reflection of the course of the game.
There were two men of the match – hooker, Freddie Thomas for his strong tackling and excellent efforts at the breakdown, and full-back, Tom Williams for his clearance work and good running lines.

Colchester U15B 35 - Haverhill U15 19
Colchester B took to the field against an unknown Haverhill side on Sunday and took their customary time to settle. Making skilful use of the blustery conditions that were in their favour, Haverhill kicked for position to set themselves up for a break through run to score first against a confused defence.
Colchester settled and began to find their form. The Forwards gelled as a pack and surged over the park using pace, numbers and aggression to dominate breakdown ball and put Haverhill under real pressure, which showed as Haverhill began to struggle with their own set-pieces. The Backs followed suit and with Doughty and Goate solid in the crucial 9 and 10 positions, the ball began to move with penetrating runs from the Centres and well-timed passes that exploited the overlaps to unlock the pace of the Wingers. These tactics paid-off with Doran twice in quick succession using his awesome pace, strength and balance to defeat the defence and run most of the pitch for two fantastic tries. Infringements were once again Colchester's nemesis and the visitors took full advantage to win back the lead with a well converted try and the first half ended 14-10 to the visitors.
Colchester were even more determined in the second half and with the wind no longer favouring Haverhill, were able to exert a dominance that the visitors could not shake. Working behind the platform of an excellent performance from the Forwards and controlled by the 9 and 10, the Centres and Wingers combined to put on a fantastic display of fluid rugby, moving the ball up and down the line to keep Haverhill constantly on the back foot. Smith, working tirelessly in the Centre, used strength and speed to cut through the weak spots to score twice. Patis exploited space to score down the wing and there was a welcome return to form for Siddle, moving the ball out wide with a well angled run to get over the line. And debutante Harry Main, playing Centre, wasn't to be left out, rounding-off a great inaugural performance with a well-earned try. Penalties continued to work against Colchester and enabled the visitors to squeeze a consolation try towards the end of the game. But there was no doubt this was Colchester's match with the second-half ending 25-5 for the home team and a well-earned 35-19 victory overall. Although the match shone with individual efforts, this was a team victory won through great teamwork with everybody giving 100% to their job on the pitch. A fantastic start to the New Year.

Colchester U14 1st 12 – Westcliff U14A 31
Colchester U14 2nd 38 – Westcliff U14B 5

Clacton U14 25 – Colchester U14 3rd 10
Three quick second half tries proved to be the difference in this close and keenly contested match. Clacton enjoyed a big size advantage in the scrum where they dominated, but despite this Colchester tacked themselves to a standstill for most of the match.
The first try came when Colchester won two quick penalties inside the Clacton 22. These were both taken quickly which enabled Tom Jasinski to run in the opening try. Clacton attacked from the kick off and nearly scored with a rolling maul, however the Colchester forwards held firm and Clacton were held up over the line. From the scrum Clacton executed a number 8 pick up to score. Clacton then piled on the pressure but it was Colchester who came closed to adding to the score before half time. Ewan Waters gathered the ball on his own line and broke a couple of tackles before Greg Cooke took up the ball and fed in Elliot Adams. He in turn released Connan O'Neill who was tackled just two yards short of the Clacton line. A wonderful flowing move that did not result in the try it deserved.
At the start of the second half the Colchester tackling deserted them for ten minutes. This enabled Clacton to run in the three tries that made the difference. When Colchester finally got going in the second half they won their first scrum of the match, turning the Clacton scrum over and winning a penalty. It was from this that Colchester went through the phases with all fifteen players involved. In the end Elliot Adams rounded off a great team try scoring in the corner. It was no less that Colchester deserved. However, the Clacton forwards still had time to demonstrate their superiority by ending the game with a push over try of their own.

Wymondham U13 37 – Colchester U13A 26
Having last by a country mile to Wymondham in their first match of the season, the U13A showed the measure of their massive improvement in the hastily arranged return fixture, losing narrowly in an excellent contest.

Colchester U13B 0 – Woodbridge U13 55
