Colchester Colts Jonah Varela has spent his summer over in Costa Rica competing in the U19 South American Championship.

Over the course of the competition, Jonah and the Peru team beat Panama, Guatemala and Costa Rica to be named the overall winners. Jonah went one step further as he was the competition's top scorer!

Colts Coach Steve Wright said:

"This is a great effort from Jonah after only playing one full season of rugby, having come to Colchester RFC from a football playing background. A testament to his natural ability and dedication and commitment to improvement."

Since touching down back homes we spoke to Jonah who said:

"I love playing rugby and when I decided to switch from football last year I had a great welcome from Colchester Rugby Club. My coaches Dean, Sean, and Steve taught me a lot about playing in a team and not just for myself, about communication and confidence. I've always felt connected to Peru - and to all my dad's family there. Playing for the Peruvian national team was the best experience of my life. The camaraderie and team spirit were amazing. The team loves everything about playing rugby - the training, the Olympic gym in Lima, and the tournament in Costa Rica. Our team didn't concede any points, and we won the fair play award - I'm really proud of that. To come home with a gold medal is a dream come true. "

Congratulations Jonah from everyone here at Colchester RFC! Catch Jonah in action at one of Colts games coming up soon!
