MATCH REPORTS FOR COLCHESTER U10`s V SOUTHEND AND HADLEIGH 22ND JANUARY

Colchester Romans 40 v 0 Southend Tigers

Colchester started the match in fine form and were clearly up for the challenge with aggressive tackling from every player including great defence work from Ben Waylett and Louis Clement. Great rucking and mauling work from Charlie Jacobs and Conall Corcoran enabled scrum half Oli Cox and fly half Reuben Bentley to distribute quick ball to the strong running backs of Jamie Bunyan, Hamish Comonte and Dan McHugh and they pierced the Southend defence time and time again.  A solid team performance by all.

Try scorers:-Jamie Bunyan (1) Reuben Bentley (2) Dan McHugh (2) and Hamish Comonte (3)

Colchester Saxons  5 v 20 Southend Lions

Colchester struggled with the intensity of the Southend team who were in fact their A team and were out muscled at the break down area time and time again, although full credit goes to all the Saxons for not giving up and  ultimately were rewarded for the second half pressure with a try from Josh Waylett. In the end though it was the physicality of Southend who with some big players were just too much for the Saxons as they went down 4 tries to 1.

Try Scorer:- Josh Waylett (1)

Colchester Romans 20 v 15 Southend Tigers/Lions mix

Colchester started the game as they finished the first with great forward play and tackling. Liam Beeton stole 3 Southend line outs which helped win the ball over and Colchester went 3 tries to nil up within the first 5 minutes including a great running wingers try from Ben Waylett who danced through 4 tackles to score in the corner. Oli Cox made a terrific run only to be cut down within sight of the line. Southend made some substitutions to try to limit the scoring by bringing on some of their A team players and scored 2 quick tries but Colchester held on with some big tackles from Conall Corcoran, Hamish Comonte, Jamie Bunyan and Dan McHugh.

Try Scorers:-Reuben Bentley (1) Ben Waylett (1) Hamish Comonte (2)

Colchester Saxons  0  v   25  Southend Lions/Tigers mix

A much improved performance from the Saxons who  kept the ball much better in the forwards and made some good breaks and were very unlucky not to score any tries, but in the end were again beaten by the stronger all round play of Southend.

Colchester Vikings 15  v  5 Southend A team

There was also time for a last game which comprised of Colchester’s strongest perceived 9 players on the day( sort of an ex Vikings team)  to play against Southends strongest 9 and what a match this was, the final score was Colchester 15 – 5 Southend. Again the forward power of Conall Corcoran, Liam Beeton and Charlie Jacobs created plenty of ball for scrum half Thomas Smith to distribute to the flying and powerful backs of William Gibson,  Hamish Comonte and Jamie Bunyan. The try of the match was all started by Liam winning a Southend line out and after making several yards the ball was recycled to scrum half Thomas Smith who got the ball to Jamie Bunyan who then spun a great pass to William Gibson who threw a switch pass to Hamish Comonte who went in at the corner, great handling and very encouraging to see what can be done with quick hands.

Try Scorers:- Hamish Comonte (2) Conall Corcoran (1)

Normans were placed into two squads again, an (A) & (B), against Hadleigh’s first team.

Colchester Normans (A) 10 v 30 Hadleigh

Normans (A) started the match with some very dominating challenges; this led to Hadleigh being on the back foot for most of the game.  With some intensive tackling and the physicality of the rucks and mauls from every player the first 8 minutes of the first half was try free.  Normans then upped the intensity to score a fantastic try in the corner with two defenders hanging off Tom Boore.  Hadleigh then approached the latter part of first half with some set pieces and a few missed tackles from the Normans saw them conceiving 3 tries.  Second half was pretty much the same as the first half, Normans taking the game to Hadleigh with some good set plays by everyone, but couldn’t find their legs for the try line. Hadleigh yet again pushed and used those missed tackles against them to their advantage to score another 3 tries.  Halfway through the second half saw some excellent rucking and mauling from inside Normans half from William Corner and Tom Reid to be held up on Hadleighs try line, with the supportive help of Andrew Corner and Thomas Stott, Chloe-Louise Lidlow snatched the ball from the hands of Hadleigh’s top player to score Normans second try.

Try scorers:-Tom Boore (1) Chloe-Louise Lidlow (1)

Colchester Normans (A) 10 v 45 Hadleigh

Normans (A) started the game as they were playing their first game with them dominating, and willing to put their defeat behind them. This came from the start, when inside Normans half, Tom Reid picked up the ball and charged towards Hadleighs defence with some good foot work he took on and ran through 4 of Hadleigh players to score the first try.  Hadleigh again like their first game, then started to punch holes in where it counted by running through the missed tackles to scores numerous tries in the first half.  Normans (A) struggled to perform with their missed tackles, but held it together with their set plays of strong rucking and mauling and ball play. Second half saw some changes for the Normans team due to some minor injuries, but with them keeping up the intensity. William Corner took the opportunity to steal the ball from a poor defended ruck, to drive forward with 3 players hanging off him, to score before full time.

Try scorers:  Tom Reid (1) William Corner (1)

Colchester Normans (B) 25 v 55 Hadleigh

Normans (B)

With neither side able to field a full second team, Normans (B) team played a six aside game against Hadleigh.  The team of Miller Brigdale, Sasha Harvey, Max Edwards, Max Drysdale, Adam wood and Nathan Howard, saw them defending bravely against a powerful and fast Hadleigh team.  However too many missed tackles and turnover balls at the breakdowns resulted in a 25 -55 loss for Colchester.

Try scorers:  Max Drysdale (2) Adam Wood (2) Nathan Howard(1)

15th January 2012

COLCHESTER  v WOODFORD / STOWMARKET

Normans were placed into two squads an (A) & (B), against a gigantic Stowmarket team.

Normans A still in amazement from the size of Stowmarket’s players were caught unaware when they broke down the defence of Normans to score the opening try.  With a quick chat from the side line from their coach and some wise words from the captain William Corner the team seemed to get into the match. Normans were physical throughout with some fiercesome tackling from Thomas Stott, Toby Wall, William Corner, Chloe-Louise Lidlow and from the smallest team member Max Arrowsmith. Although Normans missed a few tackles to concede some soft tries, the skills and pace of Tom Boore, Nathan Howard and Ben Watts provided some opportunities to break the defensive line this kept Stowmarket at bay for awhile until they broke down Normans defence to score a few more tries. Just before the Half time whistle saw a massive attack from inside Normans half with some very intensive rucking and mauling from Chloe-Louise Lidlow, William Corner, Thomas Reid and Thomas Stott the ball was then picked up by Toby Wall and passed with pace to Max Arrowsmith whom was stopped just on the try line by one Stowmarket’s sprinters.  This was straight away followed up from a massive crunching hit by Chloe-Louise Lidlow for Thomas Reid to take the ball out of his hands and score the teams well-earned try. The second half saw some more excellent play with Normans again going high on some tackles and conceding 2 more tries. Although this didn’t stop Normans  taking the game to Stowmarket the skills of Josh Mowat, Nathan Howard and William Corner provided some good ball play for a partnership of Thomas Reid and Chloe-Louise Lidlow to drive forward into Stowmarket half, with the supporting play of rucking and mauling and some hard hits from all the team saw Chloe-Louise Lidlow not taking any prisoners, by ripping the ball from the opponents arms, and with the help of her team mates she drove the ball forward to score the second try.

Colchester try scorers:  Tom Reid 1, Chloe Louise Lidlow 1

Result Colchester Normans (A) 10 Stowmarket 25

With Normans A defeated this did not let it impact Normans B’s performance with a few team changes saw some more physical play with this team learning from the mistakes the first team made they got to work straight away by not taking any prisoners. They started with some stunning rucking and mauling by Rachel Hoddell, Josh Mowet, Miller Brigdale and Chloe-Louise Lidlow presenting the ball for the backs to use.  Sasha Harvey played well as scrum half with some good passing to her backrow to produce some good runs from Max Edwards, Andrew Corner and Max Arrowsmith. Yet again Normans saw some crunching tackles made against them and conceded some tries due to the sheer size of Stowmarket’s players.  Never the less this didn’t stop William Corner partnering up with Max Drysdale to get involved in a few aggressive runs with support from the forwards to keep the ball alive by rucking and mauling. Chloe-Louise Lidlow confronted the biggest player by ripping the ball clear out of his arms and passing it to Max Drysdale from inside their own half for him to show some happy feet dance moves to past three defenders and score there first try of the game.  Second Half also saw some more physicality again from Chloe-Louse Lidlow, William Corner, Max Edwards and Josh Mowet continued, sucking in the Stowmarket’s defence, creating space for Max Arrowsmith and Miller Brigdale.  With some crunching tackles being made by Max Edwards, Miller Brigdale and Sasha Harvey kept Stowmarket at bay for awhile until they punched some holes in the defence to score a few more tries.  The replacements came on and produced some more attacking play and some really hard rucking and tackling. The final and most memorable play of the match, started with a Stowmarket’s ruck inside their own half and ball produced to their winger sprinting 20 metres towards the try line when Tom Reid chasing him down produced a crunching tackle just short of the try line with the momentum of this tackle he carried the Stowmarket winger approximately 5 metres into touch.

Colchester scorers:  Max Drysdale 2.

Colchester Normans (B) 10 Stowmarket 30

Colchester U10s Saxons played two matches with very different outcomes!!

In the first match against Woodford A, Colchester played with the greater intensity, putting Woodford under constant pressure and forcing them to make mistakes.   Colchester dominated the contact area through tremendous rucking from their forwards Finn Corcoran, Guy Parker and Freddie Parsons, all three of whom deservedly getting onto the score sheet. Finn scored through a typical short low drive from a ruck, Freddie with a surging run close to his line, and hooker Parker scoring the try of the match with a bullocking 20m run through several defenders to crash over the whitewash for his first try for Colchester in a representative match.  Woodford pulled a try back, but this only spurred Colchester to respond with another try when scrum half Thomas Smith cleverly changed direction from a short scrum to send centre Josh Waylett over on the blind side. Finally, winger William Bond, the smallest player on the field, justified his recent promotion from the development side when he showed the opposition a clean pair of heels and scampered away for a try from inside his own half.  Final score Colchester Saxons 25 – 5 Woodford.

With all due respect to Woodford B who had to borrow 2 Colchester players, the second match should have been straightforward, especially with the arrival of star player William Gibson who had missed the first match with an injury.  However, Saxons seemed to let their concentration wane and played as individuals with all players trying to run through the  main body of the Woodford defence only to end up in a series of strength sapping mauls. To Woodford’s credit they came up very fast in defence to shut down the quicker Colchester players who seemed determined not to pass the ball away from the contact area or set up quicker ruck ball. The match ebbed and flowed, but eventually Woodford scored from a series of driving mauls near the Colchester line.  Colchester scrum half Thomas Smith left the field with a nasty blood injury to his mouth to be replaced by Ben Waylett.  Final score Colchester Saxons 0 – 5 Woodford B.

Romans ReportThe Romans played 2 tough matches against Woodford. The first half of the opening match was almost totally played in the Roman’s half of the pitch with Woodford scoring after 5 minutes of constant pressure. However an individual run from Jamie Bunyan pegged the score back to 5 – 5 at half time. The second half stared much better for the Romans as Jamie scored a surging second try, again running from his own half. Woodford them levelled the score after ripping the ball on the wing. Hamish Comonte then won the ball and ran through several tackles to score on the left wing. Score Romans 15, Woodford 10.In the second match the Romans chose to pass the ball enabling them to run at the Woodford defence. This enabled both Hamish Comonte and Ruben Bentley to score from open play with Woodford unable to tackle them as they changed direction at speed. The game was far from over with Woodford scoring in the corner and only strong defending from Charlie Jacobs and Ben Waylett prevented further scores. Score Romans 10, Woodford 5.

Jamie scores again!

Normans take on Brentwood 18th December

Colchester Normans 40 Brentwood 25

Colchester Normans first attack consisting of a series of rolling mauls starting at the half way line ending with Chloe Louise Lidlow crossing the line for Colchester’s first try. Colchester were physical throughout with fiercesome tackling from Rachel Hoddell, including a great double tackle in the second half, Chloe Louise Lidlow, and Adam Wood.  Although Colchester missed a few tackles to concede some soft tries, the skills of Tom Boore and pace of Ben Watts provided too much for Brentwood.  Colchester try scorers:  Chloe Louise Lidlow 1, Tom Boore 3, and Ben Watts 4

Colchester Normans 40 Brentwood 10

Colchester played their final match as the snow came down, but did not let this impact their performance.  The physicality of Chloe Louse Lidlow, Rachel Hoddell, and Adam Wood continued, sucking in the Brentwood defence, creating space for Nathan to score one and Ben Watts to run in 5 tries.  The final and most memorable play of the match, started with a Brentwood line-out.  They passed the ball along the line to the opposite wing.  Adam Wood tackled the winger and in the same motion ripped the ball away and offloaded it to Tom Boore who showed great skill to take the ball at speed whilst stooping to collect it, and then ran the final 10 yards unopposed for the final try.  Scorers:  Ben Watts 5, Nathan 1, and Tom Boore 2.
